ODM products is the most advanced out of the types of businesses in e-commerce. Depending on your product, you may need a large team to help develop the products for sale. This will have large risks but also a larger reward if done well. Let’s look at the ODM pros and cons.

PROS

There are many pros to selling ODM products. Once you start to build an ODM product, depending on the complexity, it will be the best way to scale the business and own more than just the product itself. Since you will be able to design your own product, you will have the opportunity to increase the value of your business and income through intellectual property of your creation. In addition, you will likely decide to have a design that is new to the market that will make you a stronger competitor than the businesses that just sell off the shelf OEM products.

CONS

The cons of OEM are that it may be the hardest to start. You will need to develop your own idea and do enough market research to know if your idea will actually be viable in the market. If you want to scale up your business faster, you may need additional capital to build prototypes and hire employees to help with designing and market research. Overall, this will require a lot more work than just buying products off the shelf and reselling them.
